Interview with Lynda Filler, Author of Target in the Sun, a romantic suspense/contemporary novel.

What was your motivation for writing the story of Carlos and Mia?

I have a deep love for Mexico and it’s people. This country rescued me at a time when I was lost and searching for love in all the wrong places. As far as the lead characters in my story, I don’t think society, in general, understands that true love can exist between an older Caucasian female and a young Mexican man. It’s a taboo that I set out to shatter or at the very least, explain in my story of their relationship. Carlos and Mia are caught up in a very non-traditional love story that’s both exciting and extremely dangerous. I wrote their story from the point of view of each lover through their communications both verbal and by email. You can be totally honest when you don’t have to look someone in the eye and often say what you’re afraid to reveal in person for fear of rejection.

What’s the one reaction to your story that surprised you?

I was surprised, although I shouldn’t have been, with the way people reacted to Carlos growing up in the middle of a drug cartel family. It humanized the trauma and perils that the victims of this devastating war have to live with, and the ongoing pain and fear Carlos faces to stay alive. Also, I wasn’t prepared for the questions about whether this story was based on fact or total fiction.

Is it based on fact?

Well, if it was based on fact, I’m afraid I would have to say that it’s classified.
