If you build it they will not come!

I enjoyed an interview with Ryan Holiday today.  He talked about the creative process. We all love to create, but the marketing, not so much. Just because “you built it” doesn’t mean “they will come.”

His take is: Making the Work is 50% Marketing the work is 50%–Two separate marathons.

When we choose the life of writing, we want to write. We have to write like we have to breathe. Marketing is a time-suck and we resent it. But when we become authors, we also become authorpreneurs.

He quotes Elon Musk: Being an entrepreneur is like eating glass and staring into the abyss of death.

Every day I sit down to write/market/blog/learn/improve my skills, I need to organize that day. I need to watch the time sucks–we all know what they are–FB, Twitter, Huffington Post, email. I write the schedule and set a timer to make sure I’m following it!

I’ve added a few more Elon Quotes.

Facebook Reactions Are Now More Valuable Than Likes

by  alheva_facebookMeet Edgar.Com

They said at the time that reactions would end up influencing their algorithm – and now, they finally are.

As you probably know, Facebook assigns values to the actions users take in the News Feed, and adds up those values to determine how many people should see a post.

When reactions were first introduced, they were each given the same value as a like – clicking the Like button was worth the same as reacting with a heart or an angry face.

Now, though, reactions are worth MORE.

Facebook says that reactions are now more valuable than likes – and that means getting people to use them is more important than ever!

(Side note: for now, all reactions are worth the same – so a surprised face isn’t worth more than a sad face, or vice versa.)

How can you encourage people to use reactions, though?

Let’s take a look at what a few super successful brands are doing!

Share content that makes people FEEL something

Want people to express an emotion stronger than a like?

Make them feel it!

Facebook offers five reactions – Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry. Are you creating and sharing content that makes people feel any of those?

Think Long Term. Create A Body Of Work.

This is an excerpt from The Successful Author Mindset. Out now in ebook, print, workbook and audiobook formats by Joanna Penn.

When we see stories in the media about a particular author who made it big, who seemed to come from nowhere, there are usually years of hard work behind the book that went stratospheric.

There are also plenty of authors making a decent living who you have never heard of. Of course, there are always lightning strikes when an author hits a zeitgeist, but that’s not something to base a business plan on.
