Just Her Poetry: Seasons of a Soul

It’s so wonderful for me to be able to share D. L. Finn’s first book of poetry! As you know, I have three books of poetry and have always loved to read the works of others. So let’s all support the wonderful poems of an excellent writer and fellow Rave Review Book Club member, D. L. Finn

FINN FACTS:

  1. I love to surround myself with laughter, love, and nature. It counters some of the negativity in this world.
  2. I was amazed when a hummingbird landed on my finger as a young girl. I still feel a connection to hummingbirds.

Blurb:

Take a journey with D.L. Finn as she blends her love of nature with her deepest emotions. Sit with her on the forest floor observing its tranquil beautyor stroll along the ocean’s shore admiring the vastness of its horizon. Here in these peaceful moments you’ll be able to experience her thoughts and feelings in the light—and in the darkness. This is a thought-provoking collection of poetry that invites the reader into all the seasons of a soul.

Excerpt from NATURE: Fall and Winter:

GLOW

The forest is aglow with fall.

The reds, pinks, and golds overtaking green.

It blends together under the blue sky.

While sun’s rays accentuate the creation.

The dogwoods, ash, and cottonwood trees

Demand attention to their beauty…

In a glittery fall flash.

Before brown, gray, and white winter

Takeover in an icy-chilling clench.

It is a time of beauty…

A time of change…

A time to prepare…

A time to walk amongst this glow.

To know it’s the end of growing season

When life bursts through a cold spring ground.

Now it’s a firework of leaves brightly blazing.

But before they disappear you can’t help being that kid

Who kicks the pile of leaves or picks up a red leaf.

During the last eruption of fall’s glow.

D.L. Finn is an independent California local who encourages everyone to embrace their inner child. She was born and raised in the foggy Bay Area, but in 1990 relocated with her husband, kids, dogs, and cats to the Sierra foothills in Nevada City, CA. She immersed herself in reading all types of books, but especially loved romance, horror, and fantasy. She always treasured creating her own reality on paper. Finally, being surrounded by towering pines, oaks, and cedars, her creativity was nurtured until it bloomed. Her creations vary from children’s books, young adult fantasy, and adult paranormal romance to an autobiography with poetry. She continues on her adventures with an open invitation for her readers to join her.

Driftwood

seductive tropical waters

glorious and turbulent seas

tides in, tides out

my body flows

a siren sings

my heart aches for thee

secrets, dreams, and

shattered, battered souls

like broken coral

and shifting sands

empty shells and

d r i f t w o o d

ancient messages

bound in aubergine seaweed

brittle, root attached

not quite ready

to give up

dreams once written

rusted trawlers buried stories in the sea

sailors tied up in tales

his heart to be caught

without release

a siren sings

I hear her echo

she calls her lover out to sea

are you here, my love

can you hear my plea

you know I will be gentle

bring your heart

home

to me

(Re)Use

I want to use you

to move

to grow

to flow

into a life

I’ve never lived

I want to hold you close

inside a heart

revived alive

no longer afraid

to take

a chance

on living/loving again

I want to remember

the good

the certainty

that life

and love

can come

from unexpected places

don’t worry my love

I will write this out

over and over again

and then

I will

let

you

go

(To) Sea

is it in the wind

the salty breeze

that kisses ocean-wet shoulders

and sends a chill

down between my breasts

or in the sand

silken

a welcome caress

to hot pink toes

or is it in the baby snails

that crawl

beneath the burden

of heavy shells

nature’s sunblock

or is it the memory

of moments spent

loving you

smiles that lighten my heart

sighs that escape

from passion-filled lips

the waves gently carry

and pull me out from shore

toss and turn and cover me

reminding me

to let life

and love flow

it’s in God’s hands now

if I were a warrior Princess

I’d wrap my arrow

with kept promises

and imprison you

with love

if you would lower your guard

I could love you

let me

count

the ways

Mis-Understand

I don’t try to understand your pain

nor empathize with what you gain

by making choices of denial

waiting for time to pass

all the while forgetting

how

to

live

I don’t try to understand

a choice to abstain

from love and passion

intimacy that is a God-given-gift

the closest we can ever come to

Heaven

on

Earth

I do understand

death and war

for death is a beginning

and wars are never ending

but Love is eternal

and more than that

I must agree

A Poem… Love/Africa/Tears

5

Tears

palms sway softly

breezes whisper words I know have come

from you

dust swirls

sand stings alert eyes

grit mixes with tears

for a pain we cannot fix

and lives we may not save

an African blood moon rises

your heart turns to me

you feel my breath upon dry lips

a caress, a love word

somewhere beyond deserts—beyond droughts

and babies that cry without tears—the soil

is lush

a woman waits

and she is filled

with love

for you

Feelings for Lynda’s musings:

“What I love about your writing is how much I can read on the surface and how much color lays between the lines. Your words continue to be my shining star. Never ceasing to amaze, you bring me into the heart and soul of your Muse. Simply wonderful, Lynda.” Don MacIver, Poet, A Touch of Rose.

“Lynda, this one (Shallow) hit it on all the marks. Perfectly beautiful and intense, truthful write. Sharing. Wow!” Cherry Rose, Writer.

“Spot on, deep down, honest poetry from the heart, Lynda, just as it always should be. Totally loved it!” Chuck Steffen, Musician and Poet.

“The best kept secrets are the ones that a woman holds from the heart of the man she loves. They are so “cherished”. Ray Collins, Author & Poet, Heart of The Romantic Warrior.

“You are my inspiration!” Sabrina Helen Burum

“Lynda! Put a vice grip on my heart. I re-read and am speechless. Wow!” Jon Burgess.

“Beautiful. We should all paste this where we can see it as soon as we wake up.” Rose Aiello Morales, author of If You Find Zen at the Side of the Road, Don’t Tell Buddha.

In The Fall

I live

in the fall

of your vow

I have surrendered

against my will

your skill

overpowers

my need to have

(real) love (I can touch and feel)

but then, you ask

what is love

if not an eso(tear)ic concept

as one is overjoyed, overwhelmed

in lust—then not

is it so hard to accept

a love unconditional

one you know will always

hold your heart sacred

your soul precious

I wish I were an angel

a spirit, a dance, a whisper

I would disappear like the Wolf

lick my wounds, heal my body, nurture my soul

I wish I didn’t want

what you choose not to give me

but I do
