Why do you enjoy writing romance novels?

Screen Shot 2018-02-18 at 4.31.30 PM

I was asked this question on Quora today. It made me think about who I am as an author, and what exactly I write!

I LOVE this question. I never thought of myself as a romance author. But, when I wrote my first published novel, TARGET in the Sun  I received an award for Best in Contemporary Fiction. I had to look up what that meant!

I write from the heart. And there is romance in all things in life. It’s the natural progression of our natures. TARGET was about a relationship between an older woman and a younger man. But it was more about his past, his cartel family, his life growing up on the streets of Mexico, and how he did what he needed to do to survive. I would say that falling in love with an older woman may have been secondary to the story, but that wouldn’t be correct neither. What reviewers say about my work is that I write romance from a different angle.
I’ve since gone on to write Action/Adventure like XPOSED (with romance in it) and Suspense (yes, relationships as well) and am about to embark on the first true romance novel that I’m co-authoring.

The challenge I have with romance is that I’m not sure I believe, wait I KNOW I don’t believe in Happily Ever After or HEA; but, I’m great at HFN, Happy For Now.
Having said all the above, I also live in total denial—according to my friend Lisa. She says I do believe in HEA. I just haven’t found it yet for myself.
So why do I write about love? For the same reason that 28–32% of the male market reads romance! Deep down we all want to be loved. And some of us only find it in books.

Is it love, or lust?

You decide.

Here’s what the readers have to say:

“Target in the Sun” is a compelling story of an unlikely couple and how their fate influenced the fates of those around them. First of all, kudos to the author for telling this story from different perspectives, which allow the reader to better associate and sympathize with the characters, Carlos, Mia, and Lucia.
The idea of telling each personal story in the form of journal entries and emails works really well in this sense, and I personally loved reading the “firsthand account” of Carlos growing up in a Mexican village with drug cartels, murders, corruption and poverty being a typical lifestyle. Certain aspects of Carlos’s experiences, such as loss of his parents at an early age, becoming a drug mule for his family and witnessing the appalling conditions in which children have to grow in his country, were difficult to read, but that’s because they’re so real and need to be talked about.
Also, what I really appreciated was that Carlos didn’t allow his soul to harden despite all, and remained a kind-hearted young man who only craved love and companionship, which he was lucky to find in Mia. I won’t give away the plot, but trust me, it’s a great and very important read.” Amazon Customer

“I was taken away with all the pain and suffering that little Carlos endured throughout this tragic story. When he met Mia I hoped for a breath of fresh air for him. And although she was there was so much more to the story. An unorthodox love tale, a riveting reeling lifestyle. They say that as we live we are responsible for the choices we make, but clearly, there are some things that are out of our hands. Sometimes we are blessed with the people that come into our lives and sometimes we are cursed with the families we are born into.

The Author took it to another level, I was not accustomed to the way she wrote, in the diary style. But as I read, I could not tear myself away from the story. I have so many unanswered questions and I know that I will get them in the next book, I can’t wait to see what else comes out from this story.

This reader will continue on to find the answers…..” M. S.

“a love story like no other.”
“an exciting romance thriller”
“Could not put it down and loved this unique and brilliant approach to letting each character tell the story through their own narrative.”

Many want to know what is it like to live full time in Mexico? Is it dangerous? What are the people like? Most of my writing takes in the elements of Puerto Vallarta situated on the stunning Bay of Banderas. We are surrounded by the Sierra Madres Occidental mountains that protect us from hurricanes and earthquakes. The people are amazing, kind, family oriented and welcoming. Target in the Sun is written in a journalistic style depicting the life of a young man as he adjusts to his life in his native country. It’s poignant, fraught with passion and emotion. I hope you love it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
‘TARGET IN THE SUN’, a moving, high anxiety romance thriller, takes place on a perilous journey through the explosive dark underworld of organized drug trafficking and the complex, destructive human perils of use, abuse and the carnage it leaves in its unstoppable wake.

Caught up in the onslaught is the powerfully engaging nurture of two lovers, Carlos and Mia, discovering and reaching out in a world that could ultimately tear them apart. An infant loses both his parents tragically and spends his youth and young adulthood in disconnected search and longing, surviving on the streets of coastal Mexico where the beauty and allure of his homeland mix with his relentless desire to belong.

Anticipation builds as powerful human emotions span a search for love, acceptance and belonging to existence in a world wrought with escalating illicit drug trade from the depths of lush Mexican jungles across borders in a vast network of distribution throughout America. An expansive coalition of drug enforcement agencies on both sides of the border mount a fierce campaign of surveillance and seizure with swift and destructive assault on the drug lords their ultimate objective.

All the while a young boy struggles with the heart-wrenching prospect of a life of loneliness, sadness, anger, and an unwavering resistance to commitment. Amidst the turmoil of surroundings and circumstance, a boy becomes a man in a search for belonging that leads a troubled soul on a dangerous romp from the sultry Mexican Riviera beaches to the heat of coastal nightclubs and salacious entanglements behind closed doors.

As time passes, Mia’s visits to Puerto Vallarta become more frequent and her relationship with Carlos becomes ever-clearer. At first mere carnal instinct, a conquest of pleasures, life events, and new acquaintance bring discovery, emotional attachment and a burning desire for enduring love as it was always meant to be. ‘Target In The Sun’ is an impassioned story of search and longing for the ultimate connection.

Thank you!

I love reading about people and other authors (notice I separate people and authors). Check out Mae Clair’s blog and her interesting facts about herself!

“I wrote my first childish “masterpiece” at six and was immediately bitten by the writing bug. Since then, I’ve been composing nonstop, and have dabbled in multiple genres over the years, writing everything from fantasy, westerns, and horror to inspirational fiction, romance, and sci-fi. It took me a while to find my niche, but I’ve settled comfortably into the mystery/suspense genre (with a just a dash of romance tossed in).”

The Story:

VANISHED in the SUN, second edition of this exhilarating romance thriller series by powerfully engaging novelist Lynda Filler is finally here! Reminiscent of TARGET in the SUN, (Winner of Best in Contemporary 2017) first edition in the series, ‘VANISHED’ is an exciting and natural extension to the debut novel in which we saw lovers Mia and Carlos ultimately find a new lease on life through the serenity and safety of witness protection at an undisclosed location. Feeling secure after three years, Mia and Carlos would soon discover a mutual desire to return to their beloved Puerto Vallarta. Their ultimate safety is jeopardised for their decision.
Lucia, the infamous and decorated FBI agent who helped Mia and Carlos disappear, changes her identity and retires to the sultry beaches of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She re-unites with the lovers in romantic Paris, France and finds herself in the middle of terrorist events beyond her control. The respite of her newfound freedom is disrupted when the telephone rings and she, Carlos and Mia, are summoned to the call of duty once more.
Central to the storyline is a large group of students who hijack three busses from a cartel stronghold in the Sierra Madres of Mexico that will transport them to an annual human rights demonstration in Mexico City. Upon arrival to the venue, the students are soon accosted and taken into custody by brutal and heavily armed cartel ‘soldiers’.
This high anxiety thriller takes us from the sultry beaches of the Mexican Riviera deep inside Guerrero State into densely wooded jungle where the dreamy landscape takes on dark and sinister undertones.
Lynda Filler captures the exquisite flavor of life in coastal Puerto Vallarta through yet another of her powerful romance thriller novels; crimson sunsets, golden beaches, the sexy allure of lovers meeting and taking chances, quaint local village cafes and fresh seafood dining. There is a dark and sinister underbelly to this Shangri-La; its surroundings teeming with the evils of drug lords and their ruthless cartels in a deadly war for control of a killer trade.
VANISHED in the SUN; this is Lynda Filler at her finest.

Is it a true story?

Interview with Lynda Filler, Author of Target in the Sun, a romantic suspense/contemporary novel.

What was your motivation for writing the story of Carlos and Mia?

I have a deep love for Mexico and it’s people. This country rescued me at a time when I was lost and searching for love in all the wrong places. As far as the lead characters in my story, I don’t think society, in general, understands that true love can exist between an older Caucasian female and a young Mexican man. It’s a taboo that I set out to shatter or at the very least, explain in my story of their relationship. Carlos and Mia are caught up in a very non-traditional love story that’s both exciting and extremely dangerous. I wrote their story from the point of view of each lover through their communications both verbal and by email. You can be totally honest when you don’t have to look someone in the eye and often say what you’re afraid to reveal in person for fear of rejection.

What’s the one reaction to your story that surprised you?

I was surprised, although I shouldn’t have been, with the way people reacted to Carlos growing up in the middle of a drug cartel family. It humanized the trauma and perils that the victims of this devastating war have to live with, and the ongoing pain and fear Carlos faces to stay alive. Also, I wasn’t prepared for the questions about whether this story was based on fact or total fiction.

Is it based on fact?

Well, if it was based on fact, I’m afraid I would have to say that it’s classified.

Well, Ms. Filler, all I can say is if it’s true there are a lot of readers who would love to meet this hot and sexy couple, Carlos and Mia! And by the way, congratulations on your Nomination for BEST CONTEMPORARY BOOK BTRC2017!

Thank you. TARGET in the SUN is available for $.99c November 10/11 on a Kindle Countdown Deal at Amazon, so buy/send a copy to a friend if you’ve already read it!

And if you want to keep up with Carlos and Mia, book 2 VANISHED in the SUN is available on Amazon.

This page-turner is an impassioned story of search and longing for the ultimate connection.

Authors and Readers, What do you think?

As a professional novelist, are there “rough patches” in your books that you accept aren’t as good or interesting as others or do you keep working until you polish every bit of prose to the same degree?

In the writing of a manuscript, the answer to this would be yes, the latter. I insist that the experience my reader has is 100% the best entertainment I can provide. I write, for the most part, in the mystery, romantic suspense genre. I can’t leave any holes. I also write with several characters so there may be more than one plot line. I like short chapters. I keep my readers moving at a fast pace. Well, you can tell that just from the way I answer your question.

First I plot on Excel. If a plot line is not up to par, it gets deleted. I’m brutal with myself. I’d rather write a novella that’s good than a novel that has chapters or ‘rough patches’ that will take away from your enjoyment as my reader. I can tell you that a reviewer will catch your rough patches and call you on them.

I received a MS back from my editor this evening. I told her to be totally honest: If you don’t like it or have areas that need work or total re-writing, tell me. I want to know how my readers will experience this book. So her job is to challenge me if my work is crap.

I haven’t opened it yet to see what changes she made. But in this particular case, by the time I sent the MS to my editor, it was edited 4 times by me. The topic is male prostitution in Puerto Vallarta Mexico so there is sex in this book—more than I would normally write. I was feeling insecure, not wanting the work to be smutty or erotic. I prefer that it be classified as Contemporary having adult content.

This is what she said:

Anyways, I LOVED this story. It was engrossing, fun, emotional, sexy, and even a little unnerving at times. It was perfect!

It’s interesting that she said ‘unnerving’ because that’s EXACTLY the experience I had when some of the stories flowed through me onto the page. Each adjective she used to describe the book is the tone I wanted to achieve. Now when I open it tomorrow, there may yet be things I will change. That’s the way I work.

But professional writing is a learning process too. So don’t be too hard on yourself. If you know there are rough patches, my advice would be to shelve the manuscript for a few months. Then go back to it and delete the parts that suck. It feels good to delete whole pages. I did it with this book and I liked the feeling. I said to myself: I can do much better than this, gone!

If you’re taking the time to read my work it better be the best that I can possibly deliver.

**********

On another note, I want to thank Book Talk Radio Club for nominating TARGET in the SUN for Best Contemporary Novel of 2017! Thanks for the honor!! If you haven’t read it yet, here’s what reviewers are saying:

“Gripping and suspenseful, clever and sharp, Target in the Sun is a romantic thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the format, telling parts of the story through letters. I also enjoyed how smoothly it read, the type of book that sucks you in. Highly recommended.”

“WOW, what a journey! I couldn’t wait to continue with the second, ‘Vanished in the Sun’. I read both in 2 days, and I’m totally exhausted now with all the action in the fight against the drug cartels, love, Mexican cultural knowledge and the beautifully descriptive word paintings of Western Mexico, especially the amazing sunsets! The super-secret off-the-grid organization keeping watch over these characters is “Genius! Very intriguing! Can’t wait for #3!

Target in the Sun is a love story like no other. Filled with suspense, pain, love and drugs this book is a page-turner. Written in the form of letters, paper clippings and quotes it tells the story of Carlos (a boy whose family are like the drug Mafia of Mexico), Mia (a party girl with an alcoholic father) and Lucia (an FBI agent) and how they all connect and save each other.”

“A compelling story of danger, sadness, lust and love.”

“I wondered if Carlos could be a young El Capo, captured drug lord in news. Did childhood tragedy and family ties lead to a Carlos becoming a notorious drug lord? I’ll have to wait for a sequel from Ms. Filler for the answer to my question.”
